Funky Wave 154

Funky Wave

I was sent the Funky Wave 154 to try out from the company Funky Snowboards. This bored is a tough cookie! A real beast that has no issue blasting through most any type of condition. I have ripped this thing in fresh pow, choppy pow, on groomers, and in the slush. The only condition I didn't enjoy was just generally choppy days, as this thing is so stiff it kind of gets bucked around. In the pow it floats well and can make super nimble turns, it also has no trouble railing on groomers. I did feel like this bored was a lot to handle however.

Something I noticed right away was that this bored is VERY stiff. This bored wanted to engage into the turns all at once, not providing very much torsional flex, if any. I genuinely couldn’t tell if I should have been on the bigger version of this bored or a smaller size. All of the different sizes come with the same waist width, which makes for great float no matter what, but if you are rocking a smaller sized boot, this can be a major disadvantage. The turn radius on every model is quite long, and the leap between the 150 (6.2) size and the 154 (7) makes it hard to choose the right size. This has very slight camber, not providing very much natural pop. The tail of this board was super stiff, making it kind of nice when you lock into a wheelie, as you won’t overdo it very easily, allowing you to bring it back, which was really nice. The nose was super stiff and powerful, I felt like I really had to push into it to get it to spring me, but when it did it was pretty intense. I developed some tendonitis from doing my tamedogs on this bored, as my boots couldn’t handle how powerful this bored was. As I mentioned before this bored is incredibly stiff, which made for some benefits such as blasting through choppy moguls or railing turns, however the lack of give and torsional flex absolutely destroyed my shins, as my boots just simply couldn’t handle all of the impact this bored didn’t absorb. The stiffness also made it harder to float in the lighter snow, as I couldn't independently lift my front foot without pulling the whole bored up, so that was pretty exhausting.

Bottom of the Beast

I honestly feel pretty anxious when riding this bored. I definitely wouldn’t call this bored one of my go-to’s as I just never know what kind of day I am going to have on it. I will say that I have in fact had some absolutely amazing days on this thing, and on the other hand I’ve had some rough ones. When I was in the Italian Alps, this bored was all I could really ride, as it was stiff and powerful enough to blast me from top to bottom on those insane mountains out there, and rail through the icier sections. So I would say that if you take a trip to the dolomites or some other massive mountain range, then this bored will be a life saver, as it can handle the insanity that goes on over there. This bored is not for beginners! I would ask the Funky crew before deciding on a size for this one, because it's pretty weird how this bored is sized and to be quite honest it just confuses me. Thanks for reading, let me know if you have any questions.
